Privacy Policy

Exa Instant Lookup (“the Extension”) is a Chrome extension built by Exa. This policy describes what data the Extension accesses, how it is used, and what is collected.

How It Works

The Extension activates only when you hold Cmd (or Ctrl) and highlight text on a webpage. It does not run in the background or monitor your browsing activity.

Data Sent Per Lookup

When you trigger a lookup, the following data is sent to third-party APIs to generate results:

• Highlighted text — sent to Exa’s search API to retrieve relevant sources.
• Highlighted text, page title, page URL, and surrounding paragraph text — sent to an LLM API to generate a contextual summary.

All data is transmitted through a secure proxy server. API keys are never included in the extension itself.

Data Collection

The page URL and highlighted text may be collected in aggregate to improve the service. This data is not linked to any individual user or identity.

What We Do Not Collect

• No personally identifiable information
• No browsing history
• No cookies or tracking pixels
• No user accounts or login credentials
• No cross-site tracking

Third-Party Services

The Extension relies on the following third-party services to function:

• Exa — for search results
• An LLM provider — for generating summaries

These services have their own privacy policies governing how they process data received through API requests.

Permissions

The Extension requests access to all URLs because it is designed to work on any webpage. It only activates on explicit user interaction and does not read, modify, or collect page content without the user’s deliberate action.

Changes

If this policy is updated, the revision date at the top will be changed. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
